SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, Department of Drama: Associate or Full Professor to serve as Chair
Full-time, tenure-track faculty position available in the Department of Drama at Syracuse University.
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong leadership skills and experience in professional and/or academic administration. Candidates for the position should have a record of building internal and external relationships including fund-raising in either academic or professional settings. Candidates also should have significant expertise in one or more traditional areas in the study of theatre. The person chosen for the position will guide a creative, dedicated and experienced faculty as it continues to prepare for the future including its on-going partnership with Syracuse Stage, the premiere professional theatre (LORT and URTA) in central New York.
Specific responsibilities include overseeing curriculum, budgets and day-to-day operations of the department, coordinating faculty development and departmental programs, as well as teaching in area of expertise. The Chair also works closely with the Managing Director of Syracuse Stage and with the Producing Artistic Director, who provides artistic direction for both Syracuse Stage and the Drama Department.
The Department of Drama is recognized as one of most competitive, conservatory-style undergraduate programs in the United States. The program has an enrollment of nearly 300 students, most of whom are pursuing one of four BFA degrees: acting, musical theatre, theatre design and technology and stage management. The Department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree. New programs are being developed in theatre management, directing and playwriting. All degrees are focused on preparing students for careers in the professional world.
The Department of Drama is an academic unit within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. It is physically located in a complex housing three stages, which it shares with Syracuse Stage. The partnership between the Department and Syracuse Stage started in 1974, and has developed into an unparalleled collaborative training program, which affords students a unique opportunity to interact with working theater professionals. The department includes the Arielle Tepper semester in New York City, the Aaron Sorkin program in Los Angeles, the program at Shakespeare's Globe in London, as well as study opportunities in other cities of the world. The faculty includes 17 full-time professors, all of whom continue to work professionally. In addition, there are 25 adjunct faculty members including many who are Syracuse Stage employees teaching in their area of expertise.
