24th Annual Black Theatre Network Conference

(Em)powering the Profession:
Best Practices in Black Theatre and Performance

Los Angeles, California
July 30 – August 2, 2010

Register for Conference 2010As educational systems across the country devise new ways to engage learners and withstand the Recession, new spaces are created for regular engagement with the arts.  Instructors continue to view their work as “artistic” and the study of the arts as “fundamental to education” despite increasing class sizes and decreasing theatre production budgets.  Likewise, theatres and actors are increasingly seeking new ways to invigorate the profession, audiences, and the theater community by their involvement backstage, onstage, and in terms of production.  The multicultural theatre of Hip Hop and the re-visioned history of August Wilson, Suzan-Lori Parks, and Lynn Nottage, for instance, are important tools for re-learning, renewing, and re-invigorating our artist and classroom practices.

This conference invites the sharing of Best Practices to (em)power our artistic, economic, and educational engines in today’s challenging environment.

WELCOME TO LOS ANGELES!

LOS ANGELES is a major metropolitan city with a great deal to offer visitors.  From famous avenues and large movie companies to renowned universities and theatre companies, there is something for everyone.  BTN’s West Coast members are eager to welcome you to their region.

AIR and LAND TRANSPORTATION: plan to fly into Los Angeles (LAX), as our location will be near downtown.  Nearby airport locations include Burbank (BUR), which is north of Los Angeles; John Wayne/Orange County (SNA), which is south of Los Angeles; and Ontario (ONT), which is East of Los Angeles.

The city is sprawling, so if you plan to extend your stay in LA after the conference, then consider renting a car.  (Note that rush hour traffic is heaviest between 7:00-9:00 a.m. and 3:00-6:00 p.m.).  There is a chance that the conference hotel will have a shuttle bus to and from the airport.

PARTNERS

Register for Conference 2010We are planning our conference with the California Arts Project and hope to attract artists and educators from the Los Angeles area to participate.  Our location—in the heart of the West Coast entertainment industry—means that we will have a unique opportunity to network around theatre arts in education.
